When I started my web site I was overweight by about 50 pounds. I am the one in red above. I’m a small framed person only 5 feet 1 inch in height. When I lost the weight people started asking me how, as a science teacher and speaker, how I did it. I told them I just used what I know about the body. They asked questions about diets but the answers took a while. People told me I should write a book about it. Below is the teaser page for it.

These excerpts from the book are pretty long. I just didn’t want to have to spend a lot of time dealing with complaints because everyone is looking for something different with help in losing weight. I want you to know what you’re getting. I think you will find this is the missing information you’ve been looking for that will help you understand your body and what’s necessary to stay fit and thin. I hope so.
Introduction
In this book we are going to learn about how our body uses food, how our current society is not made to facilitate weight health, myths about how we lose weight and brainwashing we have undergone in our world about it, the biology of how we hold fat, our history as hunters and how it affects our metabolism and the newest research on losing weight, aging and calories and what they all have in common. We learn the truth about diet foods, sugar and fat. We learn about our senses and how they can help us eat less, how to cook, and how the brain wires us to want to eat and NOT exercise. We will learn how the threat of famine and our body’s ability to adapt to change, keeps us fat. We will learn about how the immune system, oxidants, free radicals, calories, sweat, sugar, proteins and body systems work together to keep you fat or make you let go of fat, extend your life and trigger energy boosts. We will learn about diseases caused by or prevented simply by what we eat and how and when we move and how we can help our body keep our energy levels up and us thinner. I explain why sometimes you exercise like crazy but the fat doesn't seem to come off, why you crave food, the real biological reason why weight lost fast comes back and how to change that.
No Time
I understand many of you are very overwhelmed with being parents, teaching your children, keeping your homes, working and nurturing those in your lives. You probably do not have the kind of time you need to devote to exercise. I address this too and you’ll find that what I write will speak to losing the weight when you don’t have time because that’s how I had to do it. I just did not have time to devote to me. I also hear you, “Will this hurt, be uncomfortable, how much will I have to suffer and will I fail this time too?” Suffering is absolutely not a part of anything we will do, on the contrary. That’s just not right. You will learn how to exercise in a way that you will never hate it and it won’t be work. As a matter of fact, you’ll like it and eventually crave it.
We will study the biology of hunger, the drive to eat, eating compulsions and cravings and I’ll teach you how to work with your body, not against it, in harmony, to help it let go of fat and build muscle. ……

About me
I am only 5 feet, one inch tall. And when I began my weight loss, I was 152 pounds. My bones are small. My joints couldn’t take that amount of weight and pressure, and my knees hurt most of the time. My neck and lower back hurt most of the time and I had frequent headaches. How did I get that way? When I got pregnant with my first child I weighed 115 pounds when it was all over, 9 years later, I weighed 120. I had been a smoker for 10 years and I quit smoking. I gained 10 pounds and went to 130. I went off birth control and went to 135. I had my son and only lost some of the weight and went to 150 where I stayed for 2 more years after having him. Over those years I had less and less time to exercise, I ate prepackaged food because my time was limited, I parked as close to the doors of wal-mart and the mall as I could because I had little time to walk, I ate lots of cookies because I had no cigarettes to keep me happy, I ate lots of food at meal times because I was brainwashed by my society what a portion was. I was addicted to fast and easy and I was paying the price for it. What’s worse is I knew better.
My Motivation
Like many of you, I had some body image problems when I looked in the mirror. When I saw myself naked, which wasn’t often, I still saw the thinner me. I saw where I was still small and where the fat had been added on. I looked at me from thin, out. Yet, most people saw an overall fat body. I had learned to stay in denial about how much weight I had actually put on. Honestly, to me, I really didn’t look that overweight. It wasn’t until I was in my sister’s wedding that things began to change.
I went for the dress fitting and I told the clerk to choose a size 10. I didn’t like the fact that I used to be a 7 and was now a 10. When I couldn’t even come close to wearing the 10, nor the 12 or the 14, but had to go to a 16, I was in shock. I reasoned it was because these were formal wear, cut large. But I’ll never forget the day the wedding photos came in. I remember looking at them and wondering what fat person my sister had in her wedding. And why didn’t I meet her, how could I be in the wedding and not meet this person who was also in the wedding? I asked her who that person was, since her face was small and hard to see. She said, “That’s you silly, who’d you think it was?” NO WAY! There’s no way that’s me, I thought. Yet photo after photo, I saw my face on THAT body. I was mortified. Why didn’t I look like that in the mirror? How in the world could I not see myself accurately? And how and when did I suddenly get so fat? I remember feeling like I was in shock and wondering why no one told me I was so fat. I was dumbfounded that I could see myself in the mirror and not see THAT. I felt shame, guilt, ugly and stupid. And I resolved that I was going to lose it.

My qualifications
I pulled from my years of science reading, research and keeping up with the latest information, the books on fad diets people asked me to read and tell them, as a scientist, what I thought. I pulled from my 8 years in therapy, 12 journals, 25+ books, 6 therapists, and confronting my feelings and reasons why I did what I did. I pulled from the Weigh Down diet, to Atkins, from the Grapefruit diet, to pills to lose weight to natural methods, I had read and thought about them all. I knew biology. I pulled from my college degree in science with classes in anatomy, physiology, cellular biology, kinesiology (body mechanics), physics, body chemistry, and exercise physiology. I pulled from my experiences as a cheerleader in high school and college and weight training and being a gymnastics teacher. I pulled from my extensive studies of thought, herbal medicine, including meditation, yoga and breathing. I pulled from my 15 years of reading the latest research on the body’s chemistry and metabolism and how we keep, lose and burn fat. I subscribe to 4 different scientific magazines and journals. I got creative and worked with the limited money and time I had while trying to be a Homeschool, homemaker wife, in a one income family.
I built my web site during this time and invented my periodic table as well as writing the Teaching Science workshop, and I spent a lot of time sitting at the computer. But when I finished the site, the workshop and the weight loss, I was able to post my picture on the site weighing 40 pounds less than I weighed when I started and less than I weighed as a senior in high school. And I have weighed 115 lbs for 3 years now. I share my years of what I put together, and tell you the real way to let your body let go of the fat it is storing. Notice I said LET your body let go of the fat. It wants to, it’s just a matter of knowing how to work WITH your body.

I am going to discuss something here that for some reason, Americans like to be in denial about. But my hope is that if you really want to lose weight and you really want to be healthy, then you are committed to learning everything, not just what is convenient.
I am going to make some very strong statements. Some you may already know, some you may fear are true and some you will find just downright impossible to believe. I encourage you to look at why you find these things hard to believe. Is it so you can continue with your lifestyle of being able to feed your family quickly and easily or consume foods that taste good but you know aren’t good for you?

Chapter 7 Wake Up Call On Exercise
Before you hold your hand up at me, before you turn this off in your brain, before you even start with the excuses, let me say that the majority of the exercise I will teach you, will be exercise you’ll hardly notice, that’ll fit into your daily routine of buying groceries, taking a shower, playing with the baby, and running errands. Our brain will dismiss something we feel strongly about simply based on something like we might be laughed at if we act on this or we might hurt someone’s feelings if we act on this information. Our thinking brains can take information meant to save our lives and it can reason us out of taking action. The differences in one word over another are very subtle but they may have huge connotations for you. When doing important work like this, why not chose what’s going to work faster for you?
