SCIENCE RULES, LAWS AND CONSTANTS

If you’ve taken my workshop on how to teach science you know about the science rules cards. If you have not, I’ll explain here. To take the workshop go to the main page of the site and sign up-www.howtoteachscience.com

One thing parents and teachers can do to help their children understand and excel in the sciences is to help them become familiar with science rules. In my opinion, all the rules, laws, facts and constants are part of what alienate parents, teachers and students and cause fear of science. Each branch of science has its own set and when put together it can seem overwhelming. Of course Chemistry and Physics are known for these and I believe that is one of the reasons they are feared. But if our children learned these basic tenets of science in childhood, science would be much easier and seem less daunting.
In Chemistry there are the laws, rules and constants, there’s the elements and their properties, there’s atomic structure and bonding, then there’s the calculations. If we are exposing our kids to the elements, the bonding and structure of atoms then the rules, laws and constants, all that’s left are calculations for when they’re older. What if we all had been taught science this way?

Here are some examples of chemistry rules, mixed beginner, intermediate and advanced:

Expanding air cools
Water flows to areas more concentrate
Anything under pressure will move to areas under less pressure
Warm air holds more water
Water evaporates, solids do not
Nature conserves energy
Energy cannot be made or destroyed
There is a difference between mass weight and density
There are 6.02x1023 molecules in a mole.
Air is a gas but behaves like a liquid.
etc………..

So a wonderful thing we can do for our children to help expose them to the “harder” sciences is to help them begin to be exposed to the rules and laws of chemistry and physics. You do it already when you show them evaporation. That is an elementary chemistry concept.
These laws and rules are part of science and if taught formally have to be memorized and understood. I believe that is a large part of what most people just don’t like; memorization.
To help our kids, we can take these rules, place them on cards and expose our children to them over time in various ways and discuss them so that they get to know them while young or during the course of their lives and days so that they seem like a normal part of life. They come to know them as they are used, daily, as part of being here and living, not as something to memorize, droll and dry in a book.
But how do you know what rules to use? And what are they? Where do you find them? What’s appropriate for beginners or intermediate or more advanced? And when you finish, do you have them all? How do you use them? What if they ask questions about them?
That’s where I come in! I have made the cards for you, at least the Chemistry ones, so far. And I’ve divided them up for beginner, intermediate and advanced. These cards include laws, rules and constants of chemistry. I did not include vocabulary. Those only serve to explain these rules and laws. I did not include theories as they may change or are not discussed in some texts then added to others.  What we have done is had them created in the 3 separate packages, in .pdf download with everything laid out so that all you have to do is print them out on card stock, cut them and away you go! As with all my products, this helps bring you these materials for much less than you’d have to pay if we handled printing and mailing.

Included in your package is a book on how to use these cards, lessons, how to answer questions they will ask and how to move them from beginner through advanced and intermediate, etc.
So for your 9 bucks you get:

Beginner Chemistry Rules Cards
Intermediate Chemistry Rules Cards
Advanced Chemistry Rules Cards
Book- How To Use Your Chemistry Rules Cards

Only $9---SO Cheap! Yay!

IMPORTANT!  Things to look out for………..
Paypal sometimes does not redirect you back, you must look for a “continue” button. If you do not have cookies enabled you will not be taken to your download.
Once you have your download page, please select each one, one at a time and choose “save” to save it to your computer so that you have them permanently. Do not close your download page until you have saved all 4 .pdf’s.
